Series Overview

Participants in the Department of Surgery M&M Conference will increase their medical knowledge, help improve systems-based issues and improve team communication as a result of engaging in the resident-led presentations discussed at M&M.  Residents focus their presentations on what happened to cause the complication and what could be done to prevent the complication for future cases and cite scholarly works to further back up their presentations. Additionally, once a month, attendees will engage in Cultural Competency curriculum, where they will achieve the following learning objectives:

1. Become familiar with common terminology and concepts related to diversity, equity and inclusion.
2. Practice discussing uncomfortable topics related to cultural complications.
3. Stimulate follow-up discussions and independent learning. 

Global Objectives

As a result of participation in this educational series, members of the healthcare team will:

• Improve case-based medical knowledge applicable to surgical patient care, such as an abnormal anatomy or common and novel complications.
• Analyze systems failures or breakdowns in communication that may have led to the error or complication.
• Contribute to the institutional quality improvement effort to reduce complications and preventable adverse events in surgical care and improve surgery outcomes. 
• Apply increased knowledge and skills to improve collaborative, interprofessional care and outcomes of surgical patients.
• Identify own assumptions and biases in an effort to better address health disparities and engage in diverse clinical encounters.
