Pediatrics Medical Education Week 2025
Overview
The Department of Pediatrics annual Medical Education Week will be held February 3-6, 2025. Through a mix of live-streamed lectures, didactic and interactive sessions, and a workshop, members of the Department of Pediatrics and the entire University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health community will have the opportunity to increase understanding and knowledge in the area of medical education. Specific activities for the week will include: UME/GME/CME updates, training from an APP perspective, ACGME initiative updates, educational scholarship dissemination, fostering trainee fulfillment, AI in medical education, and anti-bias strategies for evaluating medical students.
Practice Gaps and Needs
There are few structured programs within the Department of Pediatrics to foster collaboration and disseminate knowledge to promote scholarship in medical education. After surveying the members of the department, including Medical Education Scholarship in Pediatrics cohort and the Education Group, conversations among faculty members and related literature, it was determined that members of the Department of Pediatrics are lacking education in: giving and receiving feedback, the logistics of local and national medical education, learner assessment, trainee autonomy and self-determination theory and how to deliver assessments to a learner. It is also critical that these areas of need reflect DEI competencies.
Elements of Competence
This educational activity is designed to change learner competence and focuses on the following competencies:
- Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)/Nursing: Medical knowledge, Practice-based learning and improvement, Interpersonal and Communication Skills, and Professionalism
- Interprofessional Education Collaborative Competencies: Values/ethics for interprofessional practice, Communication, and Teams and teamwork
- UW ICEP Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion: Value diversity in the clinical encounter
Intended Audience
This activity was designed by and for physicians, nurses, advanced practice providers, fellows, and residents in the Department of Pediatrics.
Learning Objectives
As a result of this educational activity, members of the healthcare team will be able to:
- Identify different strategies and tools to facilitate the success of students requiring additional assistance.
- Examine best practices for including diversity, equity and inclusion standards into scholarly work and research projects.
- Analyze anti-bias toolkits for the evaluation of medical trainees.
- Discuss ACGME changes and how it may impact provider and trainee education.
- Demonstrate how to correctly use Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs) to observe and evaluate medical students and residents.
