Substance Use Disorders Management Boot Camp (October 15-16, 2026)

Overview 

This training aims to enhance confidence and competencies related to the management of substance use disorders in general medical settings. Through case-based and interactive didactic content, the workshop will explore issues related to assessment, monitoring, prevention, and management in the setting of unhealthy substance use.

Intended Audience

This program is designed for physicians, physician assistants, nurses, advanced practice nurses, pharmacists, social workers, pre-hospital providers, students, residents, and fellows who treat patients with opioid use disorder.

Learning Objectives

As a result of participating in this activity, learners, as members of the healthcare team, will be able to: 

  1. Determine accurate diagnosis and initiate treatment for opioid use disorder, alcohol withdrawal, and alcohol use disorder                    
  2. Demonstrate medical management and brief counseling skills needed to to work with patients who continue to use drugs and alcohol while in treatment for use disorder                  
  3. Determine appropriate treatment plan for OUD and AUD, including the initiation and maintenance of buprenorphine therapy, alcohol withdrawal management, and MAUD.  
  4. Develop approaches to working with and managing patients with stimulant use disorders and/or Hepatitis C.

Approaches to Buprenorphine for Chronic Pain

  1. List commercially available buprenorphine products for pain and opioid use disorder (OUD)
  2. Evaluate which patients are appropriate chronic pain management with buprenorphine and be able discuss the medication’s strengths and limitations in  patient-centered terms
  3. Create a transition strategy from full mu-opioid agonists to buprenorphine
  4. Make recommendations for management of acute on chronic pain in patients using buprenorphine for pain and/or OUD

  2. Determine appropriate environment (inpatient vs. outpatient) and medication for withdrawal management

Stimulant Use Disorder

  2. Compare and contrast the mechanisms of action of cocaine and methamphetamine
  3. Identify at least three off-label pharmacologic treatments for amphetamine type stimulant use disorder and/or cocaine use disorder

  1. Identify common limitations of immunoassay urine drug screening, including at least three causes of false positive and/or false negative results
  2. Differentiate between screening (immunoassay) and confirmatory urine drug testing
  3. Interpret expected and unexpected urine drug screens and how to appropriately management results with patients

  2. Identify patients at risk for significant withdrawal symptoms in the setting of BZ discontinuation
