Pediatric neurologic emergencies do not always announce themselves loudly.
Sometimes the child looks only slightly altered. Sometimes the mechanism does not seem dramatic. Sometimes the vital signs are not yet alarming. But underneath the surface, brain injury may already be evolving.
This session will focus on the early field recognition and management of pediatric neurologic emergencies, with special attention to trauma related presentations that can deteriorate quickly despite subtle initial findings. Through real or realistic case based discussion, participants will explore how prehospital assessment, airway and ventilation decisions, seizure management, neuroprotective strategies, transport choices, and handoff communication can shape what happens next in the PICU and trauma center.
Designed for EMS professionals at all levels, this episode will translate pediatric neurocritical care into practical field actions that help crews recognize danger earlier, avoid common pitfalls, and support better neurologic outcomes.
We are proud to welcome our speakers:
Neil Munjal, MD
Dr. Neil Munjal is a pediatric critical care physician and pediatric neurointensivist at UW Health and American Family Children’s Hospital, and an Assistant Professor at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. His clinical interests include acute and chronic brain injury care in critically ill children, including traumatic brain injury, stroke, and status epilepticus, with a focus on preserving brain health in the ICU and beyond.

Talal Al Hendawi, MD
Dr. Talal Al Hendawi is a Pediatric Critical Care fellow at the University of Wisconsin Department of Pediatrics. He completed medical school at October 6 University Faculty of Medicine and pediatric residency at Sidra Medicine, and is part of the pediatric critical care team supporting critically ill children at American Family Children’s Hospital.

- Paramedics
- Critical Care Paramedics
- as well as emergency department clinicians and other healthcare professionals involved in the care of pediatric patients.
Global Educational Objectives
Upon participation in this activity, EMS and emergency care professionals will be able to:
- Recognize early clinical signs and high risk features of pediatric neurologic emergencies, including traumatic brain injury, intracranial hypertension, and status epilepticus, in the prehospital setting.
- Apply evidence based prehospital management strategies for pediatric neurologic emergencies, including airway and ventilation management, seizure control, glucose assessment, and basic neuroprotective measures.
- Analyze how prehospital assessment, treatment decisions, and communication impact neurocritical care management, prevention of secondary brain injury, and overall patient outcomes.
An application for accreditation has been submitted to the Commission on Accreditation for Pre Hospital Continuing Education (CAPCE).

Participants must attend the live session in its entirety and complete the ICEP evaluation within 30 days to receive CE credit. Partial credit will not be awarded.
