Overview

This faculty development series provides an opportunity for clinicians to gain knowledge and practical skills on how to best integrate public health into their clinical service and teaching,. Participants will have the opportunity to hear from subject matter experts and discuss opportunities and challenges with fellow colleagues on such topics as: community engagement, health equity, and public health ethics.

Elements of Competence

This educational activity is designed to change learner competence and focuses on the following competencies:

  • Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)/Nursing: Interpersonal and Communication Skills, Professionalism, and Systems-based practice
  • National Academy of Medicine (NAM)/Nursing: Population Health, Apply quality improvement
  • Interprofessional Education Collaborative Competencies: Values/ethics for interprofessional practice and Teams and teamwork
  • Social Impact and Belonging: Engage in Self-reflection, Address differences in health outcomes, value culturally-centered care.

Intended Audience

This activity is designed to meet the needs of physicians, psychologists, and physical therapists.

Practice Gaps and Needs

A 2021 Survey revealed that less than 35% of UW SMPH Physician Faculty survey respondents reported feeling confident in their ability to participate in community engagement upon graduation from residency; and 61% of respondents were interested in additional community engagement training.

Learning Objectives

Session 1 Objectives:

Upon completion of this educational activity, members of the healthcare team will be able to:

  1. Define what is meant by population health and health equity
  2. Describe ways to measure population health and health equity
  3. Identify the role of clinician in improving population health and health equity
  4. Identify ways to incorporate a population health perspective and health equity considerations into medical education
