2024 UW Orthopedic Surgery Fall Visiting Professor Lectureship - Adult Reconstructive Surgery
This one-day educational forum will consist of lectures and panel discussions in Adult Reconstructive Orthopedic surgery. We are honored to have a national leader in Orthopedic Adult Reconstructive Surgery, James Huddleston, MD, join us as our visiting professor. The topics covered will include primary and revision total hip and total knee replacement, innovative techniques in total shoulder arthroplasty, the importance of osteoporosis in the management of total joint replacement patients, the role of patient reported outcome measures (PROMs) in total joint replacement, the impact of registry science to improve outcomes in joint replacement patients, and innovations in basic science that translate to real bedside advancements for patients. We are excited for this opportunity to learn from this dynamic expert in the field of Adult Reconstructive Surgery.

Practice Gaps and Needs
This event will address gaps in resident education in Orthopedic Adult Reconstructive surgery. The topics addressed will include relevant clinical information to improve individual practices, patient care, and professional development.
Intended Audience
This activity is designed to meet the needs of physicians, physician assistants, nurses and students.
Elements of Competence
This educational activity is designed to change learner competence and focuses on the following competencies:
- Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)/Nursing: Patient care and procedural skills, Medical knowledge, Practice-based learning and improvement, Interpersonal and communication skills, Professionalism
- Interprofessional Education Collaborative Competencies: Values/ethics for interprofessional practice and Teams and teamwork

Learning Objectives
As a result of participation in this activity, members of the healthcare team will be able to:
- Discuss the importance of patient reported outcome measures (PROMs) in total joint replacement including underserved communities and women.
- Explain the importance of osteoporosis in the management of total joint replacement patients including novel diagnostic techniques, bone health optimization strategies, and the role of pharmacologic management to reduce the risk of periprosthetic fracture and revision in total joint patients.
- Examine novel basic science approaches, including stem cells and mRNA techniques developed at UW, to help move from “bench to bedside.”
- Summarize how novel sensor technology used in conjunction with robotic assisted TKA can potentially improve outcomes after TKA.
- Identify novel sensors developed at UW that can be used in vivo to measure ligament tensions to help drive improved patient outcomes after TKA.
- Describe the impact of ACLR on the long term health of the knee using quantitative MRI.
- Assess the impact of registry science in improving outcomes in joint replacement patients.
