Public Health Leadership in Teaching and Engagement: Session 4 - Public Health Data

The Public Health Leadership in Teaching and Engagement program is an exciting opportunity for SMPH clinical faculty to gain knowledge and practical skills on how to best integrate public health into your clinical service, teaching, and research. Along with a small cohort of colleagues, participants will have the opportunity to hear from subject matter experts and discuss opportunities and challenges with fellow colleagues on such topics as: community engagement, advocacy, and working with public health data.

The 2022-2023 cohort has filled. Applications for the 2023-2024 cohort will be available in Summer 2023.

Session 4: This session will provide attendee with an overview of public health data sources and how to use these data sources to help assess the health status of a community.

Intended Audience

This activity is designed to meet the needs of primary care physicians and physician assistants.

Learning Objectives

As a result of participation in this educational activity, the healthcare team will be able to:

Global Objectives:

  • Define population health, community health, advocacy, health equity, and understanding public health data
  • Integrate public health considerations into clinical practice
  • Integrate public health considerations into medical education efforts
  • Develop skills in community-health related advocacy efforts using public health data to improve population and community health

Session Objectives:

  • Identify specific health indicators to assess the health status of a community 
  • Describe the benefits and limitations of primary and secondary public health data sources 
  • Examine various sources of public health data 
  • Identify teaching opportunities using public health data
