The Balanced Opioid Initiative: How to Navigate Non-Compliance with Long-Term Opioid Patients

DESCRIPTION

The Balanced Opioid Initiative focuses on opioid prescribing for patients with chronic, non-cancer pain. The overall course is designed to address the following for the health care team:

  1. Describe measures related to opioid prescribing
  2. Document your clinic's workflow related to refilling opioid prescriptions
  3. Identify a medium-term goal - one change that helps you reach the long-term goal
  4. Identify the first small change or changes you will make
  5. Evaluate progress; decide on the next small change(s)
  6. Continue making small changes until you reach the medium-term goal, and then repeat steps 4 to 6 with a new medium-term goal until you reach the overall goal
  7. Share what you have learned with others in the clinic

TARGET AUDIENCE

This activity is intended for physicians, physician assistants, nurses, and other interested health professionals.

ELEMENTS OF COMPETENCE

This activity has been designed to change learner competence and focuses on the American Board of Medical Specialties areas of patient care and procedural skills, and medical knowledge. This activity also focuses on the interprofessional competency of teams/teamwork.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

This is session 6 of 6 educational meetings. The Balanced Opioid Initiative: How to Navigate Non-Compliance with Long-Term Opioid Patients is designed to:

  • Define areas and types of non-compliance
  • Explore solutions and possible risks and benefits to various actions following an event of non-compliance
