Speaker Biography:
David H. Gustafson, PhD
Dave Gustafson directs the University of Wisconsin−Madison’s Center for Health Enhancement Systems Studies (CHESS). His research interests focus on developing tools to support sustainable individual and organizational change. CHESS created an improvement network of more 3,000 addiction treatment agencies and has conducted nationwide experiments to test the effectiveness of quality improvement models to enhance access to and retention in addiction treatment. HIs individual change research develops and tests computer systems to help people deal with serious conditions such as breast, lung and colon cancer as well as HIV, asthma, Alzheimer’s disease caregiving, aging and addiction. The addiction program (for instance) is being used by over 10,000 patients across the USA and, in randomized trials, reduced risky drinking 57% and doubled the amount of time people stay in treatment. Dave and colleagues have produced models to predict and explain success of implementation, sustainability and diffusion of innovations, as well as models to measure quality of care and understand customer needs. He is an author on over 320 reviewed publications including seven books. Dave is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, and Fellow of the Association for Health Services Research, the American Medical Informatics Association, the WK Kellogg Foundation and the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, which he co-founded and was board vice-chair. He co-chaired the federal Science Panel on Interactive Communications in Health, served on several NIH Study Sections and is a member of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s National Advisory Council.
