Training for Systems Change: Addressing Tobacco and Behavioral Health - Course 2

NOTE: If you have not competed module 1 and module 2 from Course 1, do so before starting Course 2.

Completing modules 1 and 2 from Course 1 before you begin Course 2, while not required, is recommended. These two modules provide an overview of all the dimensions of integrating tobacco into the behavioral healthcare system.

Intended Audience

Practitioners who provide health care to people with mental illness/substance abuse disorders, obligated to address the nicotine addiction of their patients as part of their scope of practice, including physicians, nurses, physician assistants, social workers, and mental health and substance abuse providers. Program Directors and Quality Improvement staff will also benefit from this activity, as they are obligated to adopt policies regarding the use of tobacco.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, the learner will be able to:

  • Discuss evidence-based tobacco dependence treatment
  • Describe how to tailor smoking cessation medications for smokers who have a mental illness and/or other addiction
  • Illustrate how to provide tobacco dependence treatment in the behavioral health setting
  • Demonstrate how to build a brief tobacco dependence intervention into an Electronic Heath Record (EHR) and how to use the EHR to facilitate exchanges between the clinician and a telephone quit line
  • Describe examples of practical advice to provide tobacco users about using e-cigarettes to quit in the context of the ever-evolving e-cigarette market and evidence
