Dr Merten is a psychologist (MS) and epidemiologist (PhD) by training with research interests in human aging. During her psychology training at the University of Bonn, she did research on the role of genes for emotional and cognitive processing on a behavioral and neuroimaging level. Her PhD work at the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases in Bonn focused on the relation between hearing and cognition in the process of aging. During her postdoctoral studies she will assess aging with a more holistic approach. She will shed light on general aging processes that affect multiple systems such as sensory, cognitive, vascular and metabolic functions and identify common pathways for multiple age-associated symptoms and diseases. In this context, she also wants to investigate biomarkers of aging to identify individuals at risk for early decline in various health conditions. In addition, she aims to assess potentially modifiable risk factors of aging with a particular focus on the roles of lifestyle, psychological and social factors for healthy aging. Understanding shared etiological pathways and identifying modifiable risk factors has great potential to improve prevention and treatment strategies for a wide range of age-related diseases.
