This one-day CME course led by expert UW SMPH faculty will feature lung, cardiac, and abdominal ultrasound, how to use ultrasound to reach vascular targets, and more. Enrollment is open to physicians and APPs at UW Health and beyond, but limited to 24 participants.

Bonus Content: Approximately four hours of in-depth asynchronous content covering Best Practices in POCUS, Approach to Shock with POCUS, Evidence-Based POCUS and How to Optimize Your POCUS Exam will be released on June 22, 2024, the day of the Focus on POCUS conference.

Course highlights:

  • Develop skills in ultrasound image acquisition and interpretation for cardiac, lung, and abdominal structures
  • Learn how to use point of care ultrasound to reach vascular targets

Practice Gaps and Needs

The American College of Physicians formally acknowledged the important role of point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) in internal medicine. In recent years, POCUS has been used by an increasing number of internal medicine specialists and subspecialists to improve diagnostic timeliness and accuracy. However, there is still a significant gap in the safe and effective use of ultrasound due to significant time and training needed for learning the skills of POCUS. Further, the American Board of Anesthesiology now incorporates POCUS into testing for ABA board certification.

Educational Need

The overall focus of this activity is to:
- Provide participants with knowledge to interpret normal compared to abnormal ultrasound images.
- Assist learners in understanding the appropriate use of ultrasound.
- Teach the skills necessary to obtain a variety of ultrasound images (i.e. lung, cardiac, abdominal) and ultrasound guided target practice.
- Utilize ultrasound to help enhance clinical decision making.   .

Elements of Competence

This activity has been designed to change learner competence and focuses on the American Board of Medical Specialties areas of patient care and procedural skills, medical knowledge, and employing evidence-based practice. This activity also focuses on the interprofessional competency of communication.

Conference Fees

$599 UW Health Physician/APP

$499 UW Health Fellows/Residents

$999 All Non-UW Health learners

The conference fee includes the cost of the Focus on Pocus live course and the enduring content.

Intended Audience

This activity is designed to meet the needs of physicians and APPs including nurse practitioners and physician assistants.

Learning Objectives

As a result of participation in this educational course, members of the healthcare team will be able to:

Conference:

  • Obtain images of the heart, lungs and abdomen that meet established clinical standards
  • Perform ultrasound guided target practice
  • Determine appropriate utilization and limitations of point of care ultrasound

Enduring:

  • Illustrate probe movements that optimize imaging planes
  • Describe lung findings in obstructive vs. non-obstructive shock
  • Identify potentially reversible causes of obstructive shock that may be recognized on POCUS exam
  • Analyze indications and limitations of point of care ultrasound.
  • Analyze key literature that supports the use of POCUS
  • Interpret POCUS findings of lung, cardiac and IVD exams in a hypotensive patient to identify types of shock present to inform treatment decisions.
  • Identify techniques to optimize ultrasound scanning with patient positioning and machine settings.
