Objectives:

  1. Describe the rationale for transitioning from a two-track to a three-track general surgery residency training model.
  2. Differentiate the educational structure and intended career outcomes of the Academic Surgery and Surgeon Scientist training tracks.
  3. Identify how changes in clinical volume, resident case exposure, faculty growth, and workforce needs support evolution of the residency training model.
  4. Explain how additional protected scholarly time may support development of surgeon scientists and preparation for future extramural research funding.
  5. Discuss how a flexible, three-track training model can support resident career development while maintaining clinical rigor, scholarly activity, leadership development, and fellowship opportunities.
