Maternal Health Emergency Department Toolkit Training

Overview

This module-based learning experience is designed to enhance the learner’s understanding of critical early obstetric warning signs and the clinical algorithms that guide appropriate responses. It also covers universal screening protocols for substance use disorder (SUD), opioid use disorder (OUD), depression, anxiety, and suicide risk. Additionally, learners will gain practical skills in performing safe and effective emergency department discharges for pregnant patients, using structured checklists, resource referrals, and coordinated hand-offs to ensure continuity of care.

Physicians, physician assistants, nurses, and healthcare professionals. 

Learning Objectives

As a result of participation in this educational activity, members of the healthcare team will…

  • Demonstrate knowledge of early obstetric warning signs and apply appropriate clinical algorithms to assess Emergency Severity Index (ESI).
  • Perform universal screening procedures for identifying substance use disorder (SUD), opioid use disorder (OUD), depression, anxiety, and suicide risk 
  • Demonstrate knowledge of appropriate ED discharge activities for pregnant patients, including checklist use, resource provision, and care hand-offs.
