Epic Physician Builder Training – Notecraft for Physicians CLN145 (May 2024 - March 2025)
Course Overview
Physician Builders make key decisions during electronic health record (EHR) implementation and maintenance process. They need to understand the implications of those decisions on clinical team members’ work and on patient safety. This course provides a solid foundation for Physician Builders to acquire competence in basic builds and techniques to modify the EHR. Physician Builders will learn how to select the best tools to meet clinical needs. They will learn how to customize the EHR to be more efficient for their organization.
Elements of Competence
This CME activity has been designed to change learner competence and performance and focuses on the ABMS area of systems-based practice, NAM areas of providing patient-centered care, applying quality improvement, and utilizing informatics.
Statement of Need and Purpose
The purpose of this training is to develop the skills to efficiently use Note templates designed by physicians in the electronic medical record, resulting in less bloated notes and improved patient safety.

Intended Audience
This program is intended for physicians in specialty and sub-specialty areas using the Epic EMR in their daily practice.
Learning Objectives
As a result of this training, Physician Builders will be able to:
- Describe the variety of tools available to document health information in the EHR.
- Build and modify foundational build tools such as SmartPhrases, SmartLinks, SmartLists, and SmartTexts that are inclusive of patient cultural idenities and health beliefs.
- Apply rules to standard documentation tools to create patient specific note templates that adapt to the patient's needs.
- Evaluate which foundational tool is best for specific clinical needs to improve team-based care and patient safety.
