  • Describe the pathophysiology of AWS and explain the pharmacologic mechanisms by which phenobarbital mitigates withdrawal symptoms.  

  • Evaluate contemporary evidence and guideline recommendations regarding phenobarbital use in AWS and identify potential practice gaps and opportunities for optimization within clinical practice. 

  • Compare phenobarbital treatment strategies, including loading-dose protocols and symptom-triggered administration, with respect to efficacy, safety, and operational considerations.
