The Balanced Opioid Initiative: Introduction

DESCRIPTION

The Balanced Opioid Initiative focuses on opioid prescribing for patients with chronic, non-cancer pain. This is session 1 of 6 educational meetings that are part of the initiative. This session introduces learners to the initiative, gives a brief history of the opioid epidemic, and discusses the goals and activities of the initiatives. Learners will learn about support the initiative offers and how to monitor key opioid prescribing metrics to tackle the complexity of implementing the CDC guideline for opioid prescribing in primary care.

TARGET AUDIENCE

This activity is intended for physicians, physician assistants, nurses, and other interested health professionals.

ELEMENTS OF COMPETENCE

This activity has been designed to change learner competence and focuses on the American Board of Medical Specialties areas of patient care and procedural skills, and medical knowledge. This activity also focuses on the interprofessional competency of teams/teamwork.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

The Balanced Opioid Initiative: Introduction is designed to address the following for the healthcare team:

  • Describe the history of opioid prescribing that led to the epidemic today
  • Identify key opioid metrics and ensure that the change team and prescribers understand and review the metrics
