Workshop 1: Sparking Ideas, Sharing Education: Unlocking Potential with the ACCME Innovation Toolkit
In this workshop, we will dive into the Innovation Toolkit, a flexible framework for planning and executing continuing education activities. Building on the collaborative efforts of the Sparking Innovation Through Continuing Education Working Group from the ACCME 2023 Learn to Thrive Meeting, the toolkit leverages design thinking methodologies and user experience research to help you get unstuck as you work to optimize engagement and instruction. In small groups, we will identify your urgent sticking points and use the Toolkit to chart a path forward.
You may choose to get started ahead of time by downloading the Innovation Toolkit: Piecing Together Novel CE Planning Approaches.
Intended Audience. This workshop is perfect for CE coordinators, planners, faculty, and anyone involved in the design and implementation of continuing education programs.
Learning Objectives. As a result of participating in this workshop, learners will:
- Describe the value of the Innovation Toolkit in enhancing CE planning.
- Utilize the toolkit to identify starting points for solving for your CE challenges.
Workshop 2: Innovate, Influence, Inspire: Behavioral Economics Techniques to Inform Design and Implementation of Continuing Education
Behavioral economics is the application of principles of psychology to the field of economics. It posits that people tend to act in predictably irrational ways, and that those behaviors can be leveraged to achieve beneficial outcomes. In this session, we will explore some of the core principles of behavioral economics, especially, choice architecture and defaults. Through interactive small-group activities, we will apply these principles to immediate challenges in continuing education planning and learning design. By the end of this workshop, you will come away with actionable insights that will help your stakeholders—learners, subject matter experts, continuing education coordinators, and others—engage more fully with continuing education.
Intended Audience. The intended audience is UW-Madison health professions faculty and staff who engage in accredited continuing education as planners and faculty. All other interested health professions educators can benefit from participation.
Learning Objectives. As a result of participating in this workshop, learners will:
- Explain behavioral economics and several of its fundamental concepts.
- Apply practical strategies such as choice architecture and the strategic use of defaults in the continuing education environment.
- Identify opportunities to use choice architecture to boost engagement among learners and subject matter experts.
- Collaborate with colleagues to design continuing education activities that align with the needs and preferences of stakeholders.
Workshop 3: Engage, Explore, Empower: Active Learning Strategies for Healthcare Educators
This workshop focuses on practical and effective active learning strategies to enhance healthcare education. Participants will explore the application of perspective-taking, jigsaw, fishbowl, and serious gaming techniques to engage learners in both face-to-face and virtual settings. Through a dynamic mix of presentations, practice, and reflective discussions, attendees will gain confidence in creatively designing and using instructional approaches that facilitate learner-teacher, learner-learner, and learner-content interactions. By the end of the workshop, participants will leave with actionable strategies to transform their educational sessions into immersive and impactful learning experiences.
Intended Audience. The intended audience is subject matter experts, presenters, and educators working in the field of accredited continuing education for healthcare professionals and teams. Other professionals and planners involved in clinical teaching and learning can benefit from participation.
Learning Objectives. As a result of participating in this workshop, learners will:
- Discuss application of perspective taking, jigsaw, fishbowl, and serious gaming in clinical teaching.
- Incorporate active learning strategies in their instruction in face-to-face and virtual spaces.
