2024 UW Orthopedic Surgery Spring Sports Medicine Visiting Professor Lectureship

This one-day educational forum will consist of lectures and panel discussions in Sports Medicine Orthopedic Surgery. We are honored to have a national leader in Orthopedic Sports Medicine, Brian Cole, MD, join us as our visiting professor. The topics covered will include cartilage regenerative and restorative procedures, complex shoulder and knee instability, revision sports surgery, and comprehensive care of the elite athlete. We are excited for this opportunity to learn from this dynamic expert in the field of Sports Medicine.

Practice Gaps and Needs

Strategies for addressing complex pediatric fractures, hip preservation, periprosthetic fractures, hand injuries and conditions, complex and basic spinal conditions, and Achilles tendon injuries. Strategies for new or updated methods to address professional development in residency education. Anticipated barriers would be potential resistance to change in current teaching/administrative practices already in use in the department programs.

We will provide lectures and panel discussions to address possible changes/updates to current practices and use Q&A with audience members to discuss the benefits of these potential changes or updates.

Intended Audience

Orthopedic physicians, residents, fellows, students, physician assistants, athletic trainers medicine, and nurses.

Learning Objectives

As a result of participation in this activity, members of the healthcare team will be able to

  1. Evaluate current controversies, assumptions and biases in primary and revision intra- and extra-articular knee ligament reconstruction, including the variation of contemporary techniques available today.
  2. Formulate appropriate treatment algorithms in the management of articular cartilage defects and pathology as well as learn the latest surgical technique options available to address these problems.
  3. Utilize case-based discussion for the management of knee and shoulder injuries and conditions.
  4. Summarize evaluation and management of patients with glenoid bone loss and deformity.
  5. Discuss surgical indications and considerations for patients with rotator cuff, labral pathology, and degenerative conditions of the shoulder.
  6. Compare current knee and shoulder injury preservation strategies and techniques, including decision-making surrounding in-season and elite athletes.

Brian J. Cole, MD, MBA
Associate Chairman and Professor, Department of Orthopedics, Rush University Medical Center 
Dr. Cole is a Professor in the Department of Orthopedics with a conjoint appointment in the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois. In 2015, he was appointed as an Associate-Chairman of the Department of Orthopedics at Rush.  In 2011, he was appointed as Chairman of Surgery at Rush Oak Park Hospital. He is the Section Head of the Cartilage Research and Restoration Center at Rush specializing in the treatment of arthritis in young active patients with a focus on regenerative medicine and biologic alternatives to surgery.  He also serves as the head of the Orthopedic Master’s Training Program and trains residents and fellows in sports medicine and research.

Sports Medicine & Shoulder Fellow - Midwest Orthopaedic at Rush

Eric Cotter is a sports medicine & shoulder fellow at the Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush. He recently completed his orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health where he was named Chief Resident in 2022-2023. Prior to completing his residency in orthopedics, he graduated Alpha Omega Alpha from the Georgetown University School of Medicine in 2018. Prior to his studies at Georgetown, Eric graduated summa cum laude from Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in May 2013, with a Bachelors of Science in biomedical sciences.
