2023 Dennis G. Maki Infectious Disease Update Conference
This conference is dedicated to Dennis G. Maki, MD, Emeritus Professor, Department of Medicine, University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, in recognition of his achievements and contributions as a physician, scholar, and educator in the field of Infectious Disease.
Infectious diseases link our world and our health together. The COVID pandemic reinforced how accurate and up-to-date information on common and emerging infectious diseases are needed by both our medical providers and general population. This activity addresses critical topics in Infectious Diseases identified through professional practice, data in healthcare quality, and requests from participants in related continuing education activities.
STATEMENT OF NEED
Nearly 80% of both Wisconsin and nationwide counties lack an infectious disease physician. Providing accurate and up-to-date information on common and emerging infectious diseases to frontline primary care and hospital-based providers is paramount to caring for the infectious disease needs of the country. In addition, antibiotic overuse in ambulatory setting is common and leads to measurable patient- and population-level harms including rising prevalence of drug-resistant bacteria and Clostridioides difficile diarrhea, yet interventions to improve prescribing are not widely adopted. Also, the population of immunocompromised patients is growing yet implementation and uptake of ID prevention and treatment practices are not fully realized. Based on the documented gaps in current practice, this activity addresses critical topics in Infectious Diseases identified through professional practice; local, regional and national data in healthcare quality; and requests from participants in related continuing education activities. The overall focus of this activity is to discuss these practice gaps and provide participants with the knowledge, skills, tools and resources needed to change their professional practice and improve the care of their patients.
ELEMENTS OF COMPETENCE
This activity has been designed to change learner competence and focuses on the American Board of Medical Specialties areas of medical knowledge, patient-centered care, employing evidence-based practice, and population health. This activity also focuses on the interprofessional competencies of roles/responsibilities.
Intended Audience
This activity is intended for primary care physicians, physician assistants, nurses, pharmacists, and other health care specialists dealing with infectious diseases.
Learning Objectives
As a result of participation in this educational series, members of the healthcare team will improve ability to...
- Prevent, accurately diagnose, and optimally treat infectious disease conditions commonly seen by the primary care health care team
- Develop a culture of antimicrobial stewardship to optimize clinical outcomes and minimize unintended consequences of antimicrobial use
- Explain updated infectious disease practice guidelines
- Describe the unique infectious disease risks of vulnerable patient populations
- Identify health disparities that may impact access to care and/or the management of patients
- Manage the impact of bias, class, and power on the clinical encounter and strategize ways to counteract bias in the clinical encounter
