CANCELLED: 2020 PalliTALK: A Communication Workshop for Practicing Providers

Madison, WI US
June 1, 2020 to June 2, 2020

Statement of Need

While healthcare providers are taught the various aspects of medicine and patient care, the skills of communicating with patients and families are less often explicitly taught and practiced. PalliTALK is a high-quality and well-respected simulation-based workshop designed for practitioners who want to dramatically increase their comfort and confidence in common and challenging clinical situations with seriously ill patients and families. Participants will return home immediately ready to use several new skills. You will also have an individualized learning plan and increased self-awareness and self-efficacy related to your communication skills.

    Intended Audience

This CE activity is for Practicing Providers (if you are a Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellow, please register for the fellow course instead). PalliTALK is designed for physicians, PAs, NPs, RNs, social workers, and other providers who are interested in developing their communication skills.

    Learning Objectives

After completing the PalliTALK workshop, participants will be able to:

    • Recognize emphatic communication as a set of skills that can be practiced and improved upon.
    • Reflect on their own communication startegies in the moment in order to adapt their style to best match an individual patient and context.
    • Identify several communication frameworks, such as SPIKES and NURSE and Best Care/Worst Case, and to assess their own communication strengths and weaknesses.
    • Define verbal and nonverbal forms of communication and understand how to use each most effectively.
    • Describe the role that effective communication plays in improving patient outcomes.
    • Build relationships with interprofessional regional colleagues who attend PalliTALK.
    • Unlock creativity and spontaneity even in moments of stress.
