19th Annual Cancer Conference: Out of the Shadows - Bringing Taboo Cancer Topics into the Light (Online Activity)
CONFERENCE DESCRIPTION
Difficult conversations have been the norm since COVID-19. In addition to COVID-19, there are topics that are still difficult to discuss for cancer patients and clinicians alike - even in 2022. This course examines body image concerns, guilt, dysfunctional families, intimacy, suicide, financial toxicity, and more.
INTENDED AUDIENCE
This activity is designed for individuals who are involved in cancer treatment and education of cancer patients and their families: oncology physicians, primary care physicians, oncology nurses, oncology nurse practitioners, clinical research associates, health educators, social workers, psychologists, chaplains and other interested health care professionals involved in cancer care. Patients, caregivers and community members are also encouraged to attend.
ELEMENTS OF COMPETENCE
This continuing education activity has been designed to change learner competence and focuses on the American Board of Medical Specialties areas of patient care and procedural skills, interpersonal and communication skills, professionalism, and the interprofessional competencies of communication, and teams/teamwork.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
This activity is designed to:
- Engage patients/significant others in challenging conversations regarding cancer recovery and intimacy
- Discuss how to relate your patients' subjective experience (including their experience of you)
- Identify interventions that may decrease the risk of suicide
- Articulate body image concerns and associated sequelae experienced by patients after cancer treatment
- Explore common dynamics present for many couples before cancer
- Develop ways to have appropriate boundaries when supporting patients
- Explore family members' reactions to genetic testing and identify anticipatory guidance techniques to improve the patient experience
- Describe the various forms of hastening death and explore techniques to respond to such requests

State and provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for continuing education credit.
