Trainee Autonomy & Self-Determination Theory
The Department of Pediatrics inaugural Medical Education Week will be held April 19-21, 2023. Through a mix of live streamed lectures, didactic and interactive sessions and a workshop, members of the Department of Pediatrics and the entire University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health community will have the opportunity to increase understanding and knowledge in the area of medical education. Specific activities for the week will include: supporting learner feedback, learner assessments, and trainee autonomy and self-determination theory.
Intended Audience
This activity was designed by and for physicians, nurses, advanced practice providers, and trainees in the Department of Pediatrics.
Learning Objectives
As a result of this educational activity, learners as members of the healthcare team will be able to:
- Explain the benefits of fostering intrinsic motivation in learners and workers
- Define the three core tenets of Self-Determination Theory (SDT)
- Apply the SDT framework to the clinical learning environment
- Determine one change you will make to foster learners’ intrinsic motivation in your clinical work
