Dexcom was founded in 1999 based on the groundbreaking research conducted at the University of Wisconsin by nephrologist Stuart J. Updike MD and MIT-trained biomedical engineer, Mark Shults PhD. Back in 1967, the young Dr. Updike envisioned an implantable, long-performing glucose sensor that the body would not reject. He applied for and received an NIH grant to explore the feasibility of such a device and spent the next 30 years researching his idea. In 1999, Dr. Updike became one of the founding fathers of Dexcom, and our first corporate office was in the basement of Fred Jaeger’s dental office over by Hilldale Mall. Dexcom has since dedicated the last 25 years to innovating upon Dr. Updike's original idea for a continuous glucose monitor, making the device smaller, more accurate, and interoperable with countless other diabetes technologies, digital health apps/platforms and now our Dexcom Clarity software is interoperable with Epic. Dexcom is also the first CGM manufacturer to recently introduce our country’s first over-the-counter CGM, the Stelo by Dexcom, which is now available without a prescription for your patients who don’t yet qualify for a CGM through their insurance.
