OVERVIEW OF THE MENTAL HEALTH LEARNING COMMUNITY

File TRANSCRIPT

Welcome to the Mental Health Online Community.

In 2017, almost 20% (or 807,000) adults in Wisconsin struggled with a mental health condition; nearly half of them had a co-occurring substance use disorder [1]

In the five-year period from 2011 - 2014, rates of severe youth depression increased from 5.9% to 8.2% [1]

In 2017, 3.88% (or 170,000) adults in Wisconsin had serious thoughts of suicide [1]  Each year, over 700 Wisconsin residents die by suicide [2]

Patients, in particular, rural patients, experience issues related to accessibility, whether it be distance traveled to a provider or inadequate insurance; availability, including lack of available treatment providers, treatment types (ie, inpatient, individual, or intensive community services); and acceptability of stigma [3]

In 2017, one out of 5 adults in Wisconsin report that they are not able to get the treatment that they need whether it be inpatient treatment/counseling, outpatient treatment/counseling, or prescription medication [1]

Only a quarter of adolescents with major depression in Wisconsin received any mental health treatment in 2017 [1]

The goal of this Mental Health learning community is to provide a forum for health professionals across disciplines and professions to learn about and discuss best practice to develop, maintain, and expand mental health services for patients across Wisconsin.

I hope you enjoy participating and learning in the Mental Health Learning Community. Your feedback is always welcome at info@icep.wisc.edu.
