UW Health Pain Management Program Online Training

This activity will help health care providers understand how to treat all patients who have pain management concerns using a newly-adopted pain scale, comfort menu, and multiple modes of pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions.

Intended Audience

This activity is intended to meet the needs of professionals who provide healthcare to patients with pain management considerations. This includes physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, pharmacists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, and others.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to: 

  1. Apply the CDC’s Five Guiding Principles when judiciously prescribing opioids.
  2. Recognize and evaluate when and how to use the functional pain scale.
  3. Recommend non-pharmacological options for pain management that best suits the type of pain and patient preference.
  4. Describe the biases and disparities that have existed in pain management.
  5. Communicate effectively with patients about their pain and ways that it can be managed.
