Using TED Talk-style Presentations for Health Care Professional Education

As educators, we are always looking for something different and effective in medical education. The explosive popularity of TED Talks has made educators take notice. These micro-presentations showcase well-formed ideas, or new or surprising ideas, or they challenge a belief, presenting a new argument within the context of an established issue. They tend to draw large audiences and became popular among the general public.

Health Sciences Clinical Educators including faculty, preceptors and instructors.

Learning Objectives

Participants of the online journal club will:

  1. Examine a research article relevant to clinical teaching and context.
  2. Apply an evidence based approach to a scenario.
  3. Discuss the article and case in relation to clinical teaching.

To participate in the course follow the directions below:

  1. After you login, access and read the journal article and scenario information by clicking the Begin tab and then the Begin button. Click the Journal Article tab, open and read the article pdf then click the Scenario tab to read the scenario.
  2. Click the Discussion Question 1 tab to read and post responses to the question and comments.
  3. Repeat for Discussion Question 2.
  4. You should read and respond to the comments and questions from the discussion facilitator and other participants beginning September 10, 2018 until September 16,2018 or beyond this time as appropriate.
  5. To see newly posted comments and questions click the Review button on either discussion question tabs or refresh the page in the web browser. 
  6. As this is not a live presentation your engagement by posting timely comments and responses helps keep the conversation fresh.
  7. The discussion facilitator may continue to, monitor, review and reply to comments periodically as appropriate.
  8. Remember to see new comments in real time: refresh the page or click the Review button in Discussion Question tabs.
  9. Next, complete the evaluation.
