Choosing An Approach To Evaluating Your Program

Programs – that is, sets of related activities with a particular long-term aim, such as training – are fundamental to clinical education. However, programs are often designed and carried out with little consideration of how their impact will be determined; plans for the program’s evaluation can be an afterthought. Since there is no single way to evaluate a program, program administrators and evaluators sometimes need help with choosing an evaluation approach on which to build an evaluation plan. This month, we’ll read, discuss, and apply a short article that reviews just two program evaluation models – appreciative inquiry and the logic model – and suggests how to choose one that will work for your evaluation planning.
